Schuetzen Gun Works was founded by Robert C. Schuetz in 1956. At that time, the company began making barrel blanks and rifle barrels. The business relocated to Olympia, Washington in 1975 and set out to start manufacturing customized bolt action rifles which were embraced warmly by the market and have since continued to be manufactured under the SGW brand despite the company’s change of name to Olympia Arms. 1982 is the year that SGW started to manufacture AR-15 and M16 rifles and other components using the Olympic Arms brand name. Later in 1987, M.S. Safari was bought out by the company and the M1911 Pistol was added to the product line under the Safari Arms brand name.
Today, SGW, now Olympia, is among the very few companies that make all its parts in-house. This has enabled the company to keep track of the quality and it is therefore hailed as one of the most reliable and reputable brands in the US firearm industry. Some AR-15 features that this company has created are now viewed as the standard. Other innovations that have earned SGW & Olympia respect are free floating aluminum hand guards, pistol caliber conversion, flat top upper receivers and AR-15 based pistols. The future of the company is definitely bright if its products and customer base are anything to go by.
