Remington Model 31 is a somewhat more historical a pump action shotgun than Remington 870. It is the predecessor to model 870. It replaced 870 because of its cost effective manufacturing process.  Remington Model 31 was primarily designed in 1931 C.C. Loomis and John Pederson and was in production by the Remington Arms from then to 1949; and subsequently took the place of Remington 870 in 1951. The total number of production was 196000. It was used in the World War 2 by the United States. It has a variant designated as Remington Model 31L. The 31L was a bit lighter than the basic 31.

These shotgun models were chambered for 12 gauge, 16 gauge and 20 gauge cartridges. Despite its primary success it couldn’t hold on to the competition with the Winchester Model 1912 and subsequently production was shut off due to lack of sales. However model 31 was later taken as the basis for designing Mossberg Model 500 and other variants.
