Before the Civil War United States Army used to store its gunpowder at various locations but it gradually started to feel the need of keeping their powder centrally in a single storage facility. This need ultimately led to the establishment of the Picatinny Arsenal. Primarily named as Dover Powder Depot, Picatinny Arsenal was first established in September 6, 1880. However the name was changed into Picatinny Powder Depot just after the four days of establishment. Located in the Morris County, New Jersey the Picatinny Arsenal is famous for the Picatinny Rail and specializes in small arms cartridge ammunition. And its recent developments include robotic weapons and SWORDS robots.

Picatinny Arsenal used to manufacture and store only gunpowder till World War 1 but during the post war period it started to get involved in other research and development activities. While World War 2 it started to produce more heavy munitions like large caliber rounds and other ammos. Presently in its 6400 acres base the Picatinny Arsenal develops new technologies for the US Armed Forces and builds various munitions, weapons and armor systems.
