Tag: General Officer

A General is a military officer rank of high status. In the United States Uniformed services (such as Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps) Generals are those commissioned officers who are superior to the field officers (such as Colonel, Captain Etc.) in ranks.

There are generally four ranks of Generals that are distinguished by the number of stars and their titles vary according to the services they belong to. The title of the one-star Generals in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps is Brigadier General while in the Coast Guard, Navy, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps (NOAACC) and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSSC), they are called Rear Admiral (lower half). In the same way two-star Generals are Major General in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps and Rear Admiral in the Coast Guard, Navy, NOAACC and PHSSC. Three-star Generals are titled as Lieutenant General in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps and Vice Admiral in the Coast Guard, Navy, NOAACC and PHSSC. In the case of four-star Generals they are General in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps and Admiral in the Coast Guard, Navy, NOAACC and PHSSC.

Apart from these regular General ranks, there are also five-star General ranks which are generally reserved for wartimes. They are the General of Army in the Army, General of the Air Force in the Air Force and Fleet Marshal in the Navy. The highest military rank is the General of the Armies in the Army and Admiral of the Navy in the Navy. This rank is often called as six-star rank, although none of the holders of the rank have ever used six-star insignia.
