Bushmaster Firearms was founded in 1973 in Madison, North Carolina. The company is a manufacturer and distributor of firearms, and its known specialty are semi-automatic pistols and AR-15 rifles. Its array of weaponry is used by the military and law enforcement agencies, for home defense, hunting, target competition, and recreational activities. Most of the firearms produced by Bushmaster are chambered with a 5.56 NATO, forged in a 7.75-T6 aluminum receivers, barreled in 4150 steel, chrome-lined, and offered with a 1:9 twist rate. The first generation rifles that the company has produced were chambered with the 5.56mm cartridge and are now rare and can be considered as collectibles.

In April 2006, after a legal settlement with the victims of the Beltway sniper attacks in 2002, the company became a subsidiary of the Freedom Group. In January 2008, Bushmaster agreed to a licensing deal with Magpul, which allows them the rights to produce and distribute the Magpul Masada rifle, now renamed as Bushmaster ACR. In December 2012, it was announced that Cerberus Capital Management will let go and sell the Freedom Group, which is now the parent company of Bushmaster, after the events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
