The British Army is a branch of the British Armed Forces concerned with land warfare. It was formerly known as the English Army. English Army was established originally in 1660. However in 1707 it subsumed Scottish and Irish regiments and the British Army was formed. It was primarily operated from the London War Office till 1964. In 1964 it was brought under the Ministry of defence and the operational head of the army is the Chief of the General Staff; presently General Sir Nick Carter. The British Army along with all the members of it affirm allegiance to the monarch. However the prefix “Royal” as in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force is not used before the name due to historic conflict between the parliament and the monarchy.

The success of the army in wars like this has enabled England to reach the present state of military and economic influence. Apart from this historical wars the army has also performed vital role in the recent conflicts like the Gulf War, War in Afghanistan, Iraq War etc.
