The 10mm, also known as the 10mm Automatic, is a handgun cartridge designed by Jeff Cooper, commissioned for the Dornaus & Dixon Enterprises, and was originally used for the Bren Ten pistol. In 1983, its design was improved and re-introduced by the Swedish gun manufacturer Norma.
This cartridge was designed for pistols to be used in the police, military, and self-defense. It was developed as an ideal solution for those people looking to bridge the gap between the .45 ACP (slow but big) and the 9mm Luger (small but fast).
A lot of problems caused the closure of Dornaus & Dixon, but Colt saved this cartridge by developing the Delta Elite, an M1911 that has been modified and chambered to accept the 10mm. The Glock 20 and Glock 29 was developed using this round as well. However, the 10mm has been decommissioned and displaced by the .40 Smith & Wesson, due to its excessive recoil and because the too-large pistols chambered with this cartridge were not fit for small hands.
The 10mm cartridge has a high velocity and a less-curved flight path, and today, it is mainly used for hunting game. This cartridge is one of the few selected rimless, semi-automatic cartridges that can be legally used to hunt for white-tailed deer in the US.
